Duracell unveils a new auto USB car charger

If you travel a lot for your job, you probably carry several important gizmos that require a USB connection to keep them charged up. So you undoubtedly understand the importance of keeping these gadgets charged between appointments. Duracell also understands the importance of having some power insurance, just in case you can’t recharge your gadgets with your standard wall charger.

Duracell has announced a new USB Auto Car Charger that is a low profile charger that fits almost entirely inside the DC outlet of a car or other vehicle. When you plug in the charger to the outlet, the device illuminates with a blue light so you know that it’s got the juice to pass on to your USB powered devices. The charger includes three different connectors so that it will work with devices that support standard USB, mini USB, or micro USB ports.

Unfortunately Duracell has not announced when their new USB auto charger will be released or the price point. But once it does, this is something you should definitely keep on hand if your access to AC outlets is limited.

Review: Fueltank self powered multi-device charger

What do you do if you need to recharge two devices simultaneously and there’s no power outlet to be found? If you’re carrying the Fueltank, you just plug in the appropriate adapters and charge anywhere–at least that’s the promise of Callpod’s Fueltank.

The Fueltank is a rechargeable lithium ion battery that contains more than 7 times the capacity of a standard mobile phone. While that by itself is pretty innovative, what’s ultimately the best feature is the Fueltank’s ability to charge two devices at once, all without being plugged into an AC outlet.

For my test I plugged the Fueltank into the outlet using the included AC adapter. When it was fully charged (there’s a button that you can press on the side of the Fueltank that will light up the appropriate amount of LEDs) I connected two of the proprietary device-specific adapters to it. In my case I connected the iPod one (for my iPhone) and the micro-USB one, for my mophie juice pack air. Technically, the two devices I tested with can be charged simultaneously using just the juice pack, but I wanted to see if they would charge faster using the Fueltank

As you can see in the pictures, both devices began charging immediately, and since the Fueltank has its own proprietary voltage regulator, I felt comfortable leaving the devices to charge overnight. When I returned the next day the Fueltank was still at almost a full charge. Also, in a separate test I found that the Fueltank charged the mophie juice pack faster than standard USB.

My favorite thing about the Fueltank is that it can charge two devices at once and using Callpod’s adapters–there are thousands to choose from–I can charge just about anything I can think of. So, for future travels, I could just pack the Fueltank and whatever adapters I think I might need, and rest assured that I could recharge my devices anywhere.

The only negative I could think of with the Fueltank is what it actually looks like. When you’re not traveling and it’s sitting on your desk, it looks pretty cool with all of its LEDs glowing.

Man Killed by Cellphone Explosion

A man in China died when his cellphone exploded, severing a major artery in his neck, according to a Chinese daily newspaper.The man’s identity was not disclosed, but Shin Min Daily News reported he was an employee at a computer shop in Guangzhou, China, where the incident occurred.Another employee at the shop said she heard a loud bang and then saw her co-worker lying on the shop floor in a pool of blood. She said the victim recently replaced the battery in his cellphone.Chinese authorities are investigating the death and have yet to determine the model of the victim’s phone and battery, as well as whether they were counterfeit products.In an eerily similar incident in July 2007, 22-year-old Xiao Jinpeng of Gansu, China died from chest wounds after his cellphone exploded in his chest pocket. The incident occurred at his workplace, an iron mill. The Chinese government speculated the phone’s battery exploded in reaction to the heat in the mill.China has been under scrutiny for a number of years for exporting cheaply made products that pose safety risks. In July 2008, the BBC reported that hundreds of thousands of potentially electrocuting phone chargers were making their way from China into the UK. Some of the chargers were generically labeled “Travel Charger.”
