Review: Western Digital My DVR Expander 1TB eSATA

The My DVR 1TB expander from Western Digital is an easy and cost-effective way to add approximately 1,100 hours of SD recording capacity or 140 hours of HD recording capacity to your TiVo HD, TiVo HD XL, or TiVo Series3.

At only $169.99, it provides you with a cheaper alternative to get the same recording capacity of a TiVo HD XL (which carries a $200 premium over the TiVo HD) with the purchase of a TiVo HD that you can later expand.

The My DVR Expander sits external to your TiVo and is about the size of a large paperback book – 5.6 inches x 2.2 inches x 6.8 inches. It needs to be plugged into your AC and into the eSATA port on the back of your TiVo.

Once the device is properly setup, you basically forget that it is there. Kudos to the designers for not putting any annoying bright and blinky LEDs on the front. It simply has a soft amber glow indicating that it is powered on. It also has no buttons or switches to confuse you and runs extremely quietly. I tested this by letting it run just a few feet from my bed and it never disturbed me.

The process of hooking up the My DVR Expander is not at all like adding external storage to a PC… in which the external device gets a new drive letter and you have to manage how you will distribute your storage across the multiple volumes. In true TiVo fashion, the recordings simply “spread out” across all available storage. It is nothing that you have to think about our manage.

The downside of the content being spread across all volumes (i.e. “striped” across your internal drive and the external expander) is that if you unplug the My DVR device from your TiVo, several things happen:

  • You can’t take any recordings with you to another TiVo or to a PC. (This is probably on purpose due to content restrictions.)
  • You lose most if not all of what is recorded on your TiVo. (This seems like an oversight to me. There should be an advanced menu setting on the TiVo that lets you safely detach the volume and copy back anything that you have space for on the primary drive.)

The fact that you lose most if not all of what is recorded on your TiVo is the most surprising. I would hope that this will be addressed in a future revision of the TiVo software. It seems they’ve made it way too hard for you to ever upgrade to a larger Western Digital My DVR expander that might come to market down the road. (There is reason to believe this could happen given that they’ve recently upgraded from a 500GB product to the 1TB model that I reviewed.)

Intel, Microsoft, Dell and Panasonic looking for WiGig - faster home wireless

We have Wi-Fi, WiMAX, WirelessHD, WHDI, but the new buzzword for higher-speed at-home wireless networking is WiGig — short for Wireless Gigabit Alliance. And not just for peripherals, but also for cell phones, TVs and video cameras; basically anything that has wireless data transmission needs.

WiGig is the name given to a new association created to develop “an even faster wireless technology”, that is expected to be at least 10x faster than Wi-Fi. It’s greatest strength (and potential weakness in some people’s eyes) is that it will only operate over short distances, such as within a single room (or possibly two) by operating in the 60 GHz band.

Intel, Microsoft, Dell and Panasonic have all teamed up to form the association. Their effort will compete against other approaches to in-home wireless data transmission, including SiBEAM’s WirelessHD — which connects set-top boxes and Blu-ray players to TVs; and Amimon’s WHDI, which uses a Wi-Fi-like technology for the same purpose.

WiGig will provide enough bandwidth to fully transmit an entire DVD in 15 seconds, which is about 6 Gigabits per second. Its range will be limited to about 30 feet max, with notably drop-offs in throughput beyond 15-20 feet. Within 10 feet it will have its strongest transmission range, making it ideal for nearby entertainment center components.

ASUS gets first WHQL motherboard certification for 32-bit Windows 7

ASUS Tek Computer announced this week that they have become the first motherboard manufacturer to obtain WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certification for 32-bit Windows 7. ASUS’ P5Q PRO and P5Q SE PLUS have received the coveted seal of approval. The company is expecting other models to be certified soon.

Hardware undergoes specific tests by the manufacturer and stringent testing by Microsoft before being allowed to use the “Compatible with Windows 7″ logo. To ensure that ASUS motherboard users “will enjoy a complete and flawless Windows 7 experience when the operating system is officially launched,” ASUS is striving to obtain certification for its entire line of motherboards.

The Windows 7 Logo Program is supposed to ensure that companies who are awarded the use of the logo have products that are reliable and compatible with Microsoft. Companies that meet the requirements get to use the logo, and benefit from the market recognition, and consumer confidence it supposedly brings to a product.

For now, Microsoft has only blessed ASUS’ two models. One is the P5Q SE PLUS, with an Intel Core 2 Extreme/Intel Core 2 Quad, or Intel Core 2 Duo Processor; the Intel P45/ICH10 chip set; Gb LAN, with a 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 graphics slot. Its memory stands at 16GB, DDR2 1200 MHz. The front side bus (FBS) is 1600 MHz. The second winner, the P5Q PRO runs the same CPU, FSB, LAN and memory. Its chip set is the Intel P45/ICH10R, and the graphics slot is 2 x PCIe 2.0 x16.

ASUS also was joined this month by DTS thereby incorporating the Surround Sensation Ultra PC into their P5Q Turbo and the latest M4 Series. The partnership will entertain users with a surround effect from just two speakers or even headphones. DTS was founded in 1993 and pioneered in multi-channel audio. They’ve expanded their repertoire to include home theater, car audio, PC and game console products. More recent products involve DVD-Video, Blu-ray Disc and Surround Music software.

In addition to motherboards, ASUS is also involved in a broad spectrum of products from PC components to complete solutions including desktops, smartphones, PDAs, broadband communications products, LCD monitors and notebooks, notably the Eee PC. The huge company has over 10,000 employees and revenues of $8 million. They probably know how to cash in on today’s WHQL certification.

Nokia unveils its cheapest 3G phone, the 2730 Classic

Nokia is planning ahead with three new models that should go on sale this fall. One of them, the new 2730 Classic will be the lowest priced 3G offering from the company. Its base price without taxes or operator subsidies is thought to be tagged at $108, the cheapest from a top-tier manufacturer. Two other models, the 7020 and 2720 Fold will be slightly more costly than the highlighted 2730 model.

The 7020 has an external display that is not seen until it is tapped twice, or when a call or message is received. Internally, you’ll find a suite of Nokia applications, with Facebook, MySpace and YouTube already bookmarked. Rounding out the 7020 are Opera Mini, the mobile web browser, an MP3 player and FM radio, plus a 2 megapixel camera. It will go for $122 during the 4th quarter, 2009.

Mobile Burn tells us that the 2720 fold was “designed for emerging rural phone markets” and includes “Nokia Life Tools and Ovi Mail, two applications created by Nokia for people without personal computer access.” The Education service of Nokia Life Tools helps students increase their grasp of the English language, by displaying information simultaneously in two languages. The goal is to increase general knowledge of their local area, as well as the rest of the world. Life Tools also provides innovative agricultural information to assist farmers and others in rural areas.

Intel preps 16 threads with next-gen Nehalem-EX Xeon monster

Intel’s next big server chip, Nehalem-EX, codename “Beckton”, will include 2.3 billion transistors, eight cores, 16 threads per socket, and will be available possibly in late 2009, or more likely early 2010, according to recent revelations by Intel. The chip is designed for systems in excess of two sockets, and is capable of executing 16 simultaneous threads each.

While Intel has not yet provided full details about the chip, in April they demonstrated the 300mm wafer (see pic), which showed the Beckton cores all nicely laid out. At that time, Shannon Pouline, Xeon Platform Director of Intel’s Server Products Group, said “What you’ll get at the beginning of next year — late this year or the beginning of next year — will be the push into the four-socket, eight-socket, and above space.”

In addition, they have just announced that on May 26 (a week from today), Boyd Davis, Intel’s GM of Server Platforms Marketing Group, will host the “roll-out event” to “discuss how this new server product raises the standard in cost-effective RISC replacement solutions”.

Intel will likely tempt Apple with high performing 45nm Moorestown

TG Daily’s Wolfgang Gruener managed to catch up with Anand Chandrasekher, Senior VP for Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group, during a recent trip to Silicon Valley. There he saw Intel’s next-gen 45nm Moorestown CPU/GPU hybrid operating in demo devices, along with its 65nm I/O chips (down from 130nm I/O on Atom’s mainboard). While Intel would not give performance or power data, the products are real and, according to Gruener, quite impressive and iPhone-like.

Intel’s goal of a 50x reduction in idle power consumption was also realized with the process shrink, and new power saving abilities introduced into the design. In addition, the architecture is robust, supporting 1080p video playback as well as advanced 3D graphics abilities suitable for higher-end games, beyond those of the iPhone today.

Thanks to the process shrink, Moorestown’s form factor is now small enough to rival that of iPhone’s existing design. And when faced with the obvious fact that the demo devices look very much like iPhone products, even with an aluminum outer edge, Gruener asked Chandrasekher if “Apple is still on Intel’s customer wish list?” to which Chandrasekher replied, “I would love to have Apple as a customer”.

Intel also gave a little more information about the 32nm Moorestown follow-on, codenamed Metfield. In addition, the integrated design of Moorestown is not quite as tight as was originally thought. This was a design decision by Intel to limit its risk, should any one single part fail then only that one aspect would have to be redesigned. It doesn’t integrate SATA/PATA ports, for example, nor audio and security features.

Must Have GIZMOS editors’ review: ifrogz Audiowrapz for 3rd Generation iPod Nano

Looking for a good protection for your 3rd generation iPod Nano? Well the ifrog Audiowrapz not only provides you with good silicone protection you are looking for and need for your iPod Nano but it comes with three integrated built-in speakers as well. Which is what makes the Audiowrapz stand out from the crowd.

The built-in 3 speaker system performs to my surprise quite well which makes this case a great value for its inexpensive price and simple design.

Mercedes-Benz intros SPLITVIEW COMMAND system

It’s hardly the first example of the technology — we saw a very similar system from Delphi in action at CES last year — but Mercedes-Benz’s new SPLITVIEW COMMAND system appears to be one of the first instances of it being used in a production vehicle, and that certainly counts for something. From the looks of it, the system is very similar to the Delphi one, with the 8-inch display able to let the driver keep an eye on the GPS while the passenger simultaneously watches a DVD or something equally distracting on the very same screen. That’s done with the use of a special filter that masks the display and only lets the proper pixels slip into view depending on where you are seated. No word on what sort of premium the system will demand, if any, but it’ll apparently be available on all S-Class models starting in the summer of 2009.

Just like a toy

Arlen Ness "The Big Red" / 35k

Wheel / 7k

The Californian motorspecialist Arlen Ness, the best Harley-Davidson tuner, had only one dream: to built worlds biggest dragster. After five years this dream came true.

Ness invested about $100,000 of his own money in his dream project. As starting point he took the 1200 cc engine of a Harley-Davidson. He took the huge pistons from an 8 cylinder Chevrolet, and he gave each cylinder a supercharger and two double carburetteurs. For the back wheel, he chose a huge Pirelli car tyre of 265/60 x 16".

Because a dragster has to accelerate fast, Ness used a technique which was used in World War II in aeroplanes. It was an injection of nitro oxygen which increased the power by 40%.

Specifications: 2-cylinder V-engine, air-cooled, 2089 cc, o.h.v. engine, 2 superchargers, 4 twin choke Dell'Orto carburretteurs and Nitro injection, double secondary transmission, aluminium frame, upside-down frontfork, solid back end, twin front disc brakes, twin back disc brakes, backtyre 265/60 x 16", 5 years of building time, abnormal performance.
