Circuit Strike. One v1.1 update: Still brutal, only smoother
A brutal iPhone shooter released last month strikes back with an updated version that resolved annoying frame rate issues and added nearly two dozen design tweaks that smooth out a couple of rough edges. With new treats and the same 99 cent price point, Circuit Strike. One v1.1 is one of best-valued updates for your iPhone.
We enjoyed quite a lot playing this brutal Neuromancer-styled iPhone shooter spiced up with inertia-based physics and zero-gravity battlefield. The game puts you in control of a ship inside a computer network, going head-to-head against a sysadmin who sends out turrets, drones, ships, trace routes, and intelligent AI after you. As noted in my review and preview of the game, problems with the frame rate and a too steep learning curve somewhat spoiled this otherwise perfectly fine shooter. Although the 1.0 version did maintain comfortable enough frame rate most of the time, there was a noticeable lag during complex rendering, like when you destroyed the data core.
Although this might pass unnoticed in other shooters, Circuit Strike. One’s fast-paced, brutal concept means that even a brief lag breaks your concentration, quite possibly leading to the loss of life. Simply put, eye-candy pushed the iPhone over its limits, resulting in lag above our comfortable level. H.Grenade, the U.S.-based developer behind the game, has updated the graphics engine and the game code to fix these issues. Having played the 1.1 version on my iPhone 3G, I noticed that the lag is mostly gone now, resulting in more enjoyable gaming experience.
